Entering the field of alcohol essays Teaching our youth of today about the consequences of alcohol would be beneficial to many young teens. In colleges today students like myself enter a whole new ballpark with alcohol, by being surrounded by other teens that drink and party on a daily basis. Getting so intoxicated students become violently ill, or are sent to hospitals to get their stomach pumped. All this leads to information that these students are lacking, because their parents didnt teach him what to do and what to watch out for when dealing with alcohol. If the parents do not teach these matters about alcohol at an early age, then parents risking their kid to personally find out for himself hands on. My parents personally let me start drinking at the age 16, trying a variety of alcohol substances. Beer was the choice for me because I thought that all wines and hard liquors were awful tasting, including the worst aftertaste. Beer is my favorite to drink because it has that smooth taste to it. Beer I could handle pretty well, by my sixth beer in about an hour and a half period I was perfectly fine. But then about two years later when I was 18, I was at my friends house and they wanted me to have a shot of Yukon Jack. I was pretty skeptical about this, because its alcohol content was 100 proof. My parents told me for every proof is equal to half a percent of alcohol (meaning 1 proof = Â ½ percent of alcohol in that particular bottle). Yukon Jack contained 50% alcohol, so then I only had half a shot, and had nothing else because I didnt know how my body would react. If I had anything else to drink that night I would have been extremely intoxicated. If my parents werent in volved in my life showing me the rights and wrongs of alcohol, I would probably be out there getting drunk with my friends, because I didnt know how to drink respectively. The Horror Genre Essay The horror genre is based on fear, predominantly visual, psychological and atmospherical. A very good horror may even be able to affect you physically, making you too scared to go to sleep, turn the light off or the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. The Blair Witch Project uses suspense in the way that you never get to see what is actually following the students in the woods, making you use your imagination, which can be much scarier than anything you can see. It also sets the scene at the start of the film when they ask people on the streets about the woods, and when they all say bad things you now something bad is going to happen. This happens in a similar but different form in The Superstitious Mans Story. At the start of the story it straight away sets William Privett up to be a bit strange, not in the literal sense, but in a way that he has a strange presence. The narrator says, and I quote: if he was in the house or anywhere behind your back without you seeing him, there seemed to be something clammy in the air, as if a cellar door was opened close by your elbow. The Sexton (church caretaker) says that: hed not known the bell go so heavy in his hand for years and he feared it meant death in the parish. This is like the towns-people at the start of Blair Witch; you are given the feeling that something bad is going to happen. In Silence of the Lambs after the killer, Buffalo Bill, takes a victim he puts a moth inside their mouth. Although William Privett was not murdered, a miller-moth flies out of his mouth when he is found dead in The Superstitious Mans Story. The strange thing about this is the fact that he hasnt worked in a mill for several years. At that same time Philip Hookhorn (a towns-man) was at Longpuddle Spring and saw William there, and this was peculiar because William never went there, on account that that was the place his only son drowned as a child. So it could be said that the miller-moth that came out of his mouth could have been his soul or spirit escaping from his body. His spirit may have been out of his body earlier on in the story also, because his wife Betty could have sworn that she felt him go past her while she was ironing, even though she never looked or exchanged words with him. Nancy Weedle, a friends daughter, also says that she saw William out at the same time. But Nancy saw him going in to the church on Midsummer Eve, and any faint shapes of all the folk in the parish who are going to be at deaths door within the year can be seen entering the church. The people who recover from their illness come out after a while. Notice the way that Betty felt William go by her, indicating that the unexplained, clammy aurora that he seems to have could actually be his spiritual being. This story gives me the impression that you have to be in touch with your spiritual side, believing in ghosts and other strange phenomena. But this of course was written in the eighteenth century, around the same time that Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem The Raven, which features a talking Raven and angels. Nowadays with scientific knowledge and facts, and better common sense you dont get many people finding supernatural stories believable, but the intended audience of the time would have been affected by it. IT is a good horror film. It shows us that anything can have a dark-side, as the killer in it is a clown, which is usually a happy, entertaining character. If you look at it in a certain way, Night Fears is also like this, dealing with the other sides to the human psyche, but it has other factors that conform to the horror genre. The situation that his job as night watchman has put him in, all alone at night with a fire the only light available, plus the fact that hes uneasy about taking the job, is something that is often seen in horror films. You get the impression hes unsettled with the job practically straight away, when it says just four lines into the story: Two days ago, when he first took the job, he was in inclined to suspect the light; it dazzled him, made a target of him This shows that he feels vulnerable when he is alone at work, that the small source of light he has in front of him simply makes every where else seem darker. While walking around on patrol he find himself dozing off, but one time when he reawakens he sees that there is a person sitting on the barrier to his enclosure. He straightaway finds something unusual about the man, the fact that he did not hear him approach or sit onto the barrier. I feel that he didnt hear him coming could have something to do with him dozing off slightly as he was walking. He reacts to his presence calmly, assuming that hes a drunk, and tries to usher him on his way home. Then the stranger says the first thing that spooks the watchman. When he says: A fine night, the stranger replies by saying, Yes, but cold; it will be colder before morning. At this point the night watchman turns to his brazier, and he suddenly realises that his coke supply is not as much as the previous nights, and that it is running out. When the watchman tells the stranger that this is the reason for the lack of heat coming from the fire, he begins to attack him further. how easily men forget? This coke of yours, I mean; it looks as if they didnt care about you very much, leaving you in the cold like this. This statement strikes the watchman particularly odd as that thought had just crossed his mind, and eerily the stranger picked up on it. The watchman tries to get that thought out of his mind quickly, by dismissing the strangers suggestion by saying that they probably just forgot to leave him any as they were rushing to get home. But then he contradicts himself by admitting that he doesnt know his co-workers that well, and that he has a feeling that the one they call Old Bill doesnt like him, and it was Old Bills task to leave him the nights supply of coke. The watchman then reveals that he is growing impatient with the stranger: How I would like to push him off, the night-watchman thought, irritated and somehow troubled. The two of them carry on like this for quite a while, with the stranger bringing up problems like money, sleeping during the day and not spending time with his family. With the problem of sleeping during the day the stranger says: People have done themselves in sooner than stand the torture This is an important part of the story as it is the first time that death is mentioned, and this is the main point you would when explaining why the night watchman killed himself. He thought that the blue blinds that his wife were making him would solve his insomnia, but this statement by the stranger even puts doubts in his mind about this, something that he once described as a Sovereign remedy. Then the stranger starts to get personal when he starts talking about his family: What about your children? You wont see much of them theyll grow up without knowing you not that you miss them much if children dont get fond of their father while theyre young, they never will At this point I feel that the watchman is starting to lose it, as he doesnt defend himself by saying how good the kids were, even though before the thought of his children and wife was the only this getting him through the night. The stranger then suggests that he should find another job; maybe the stranger is after the job as night watchman and is trying to scare him out of the job. The stranger seams to actually be taking control as the next quote shows: I was never brought up to a trade fathers fault It struck him that he had never confessed that before; had sworn not to give his father away. What am I coming to? This sudden control that the man has over the mind of the watchman strongly shows that the stranger was probably in his head all along, and that the doubtful side of his conscious has taken the form of this stranger. This, getting into his mind, by the stranger happens again as the watchman realises that he is soaked with perspiration: I shall get a chill, thatll be the next thing such an idea hadnt occurred to him since he was a child. This indicates that the stranger is getting deeper and deeper into his thoughts, and has now got so deep it has reached thoughts that he had not conceived since he was a child. The stranger then says: Its a pity youre under contract to finish this job As the night watchman did not mention anything about a contract, this is a pivotal moment if you are trying to understand who or what the stranger actually is, as it narrows it down to two possibilities. He is either a man after the watchmans job, as he has found out from somewhere that there is a contract involved, or he is the watchmans imagination, and he knows about the contract from the watchmans memory. The night watchman soon after starts to walk and stumble around his confinement aimlessly, banging his own head as random thoughts start to go through his mind. Then one particular thought stands out from all the confusion, as he reaches into his pocket for his knife to kill himself. The stranger then turns around for the first time and sees the watchman dead on the floor. He then warms his hands on the brazier before crossing the street and starting down an ally and did not return. Just a few moments ago when I narrowed the stranger down to two possible things, I have now decided that the stranger was the night watchmans conscious. I feel this way because I dont think that it could have been a man after his job because of the fact that he went into the ally-way and did not return. If he were a real person this would suggest that he was a homeless man, and therefore would not be after a job. The Superstitious Mans Story is a story that requires you to believe in ghosts for you to really get the effect of it. At the time it was written it was common for people to believe in that kind of thing, as there was no way to prove that ghosts didnt exist. Night Fears how ever is a more recent story and is more of a psychological story, not telling you clearly what happens at the end and leaving you to make up you own mind. In conclusion I think that Night Fears is a more effective horror story as it is more up to date and in touch with my generation, as the idea of a psychological horror is still used even in the films of today.

The Role of Setting in John Steinbeck's Of Mice & Men Throughout time man has encountered many trials and tribulations. One of these unpredictable changes was the depression era in the Western region of America. From the beginning to the end of the novel, Of Mice & Men (1937), by John Steinbeck, life is portrayed as cruel and an insurmountable conquest. During the 1930's the worst economic collapse of the world occurred : the Depression. The setting throughout this novel sets the emotions high because of the hardships that were encountered by two men looking for work. These men were George Milton and Lennie Small. George was "small and quick and hard of the face, and had sharp strong features" (9). Lennie was the opposite a " huge man, shape less of a face, with large, pale eyes, with wide sloping shoulders" (9). While the simple minded and powerful Lennie tries to keep out of trouble at the ranch, he worries about how George may get angry at him if he makes a blunder. Curly, the boss's son, is a trouble maker and pressures Lennie into fighting him which he does and pays the price. In addition, Lennie ends up killing Curley's wife, thus leading to the death of Lennie. George shoots him utilitarianly, which means he did it to bring safety to anyone who may have encountered him. With Lennies death George hoped to maximize happiness for the greatest number of people. Their dream once of having their own ranch died with Lennie. Setting is encountered in every chapter and allowing the reader to visualize the surroundings which contribute to this story more than any other element. The story is set in 1930's California on the verge of Mexico. The river Steinbeck speaks of, "The Salinas River," happens to be the birthplace of Stei... ...lood." This brings the story to and end when George killed his one and only friend, Lennie. Ironicaly, Steinbeck was a marine biologist and when he wrote this book he was in the ways of looking at water. The pond that Lennie drank out of, which the river that ran into it came from his home town, and the cruel view of nature as the snake that probably ate the mouse that Lennie killed was devoured by a heron. Thus, showing that things have a chain reaction in nature and Lennie, some what, got revenged upon by the mouse and the other mammals that he killed. The setting is the biggest element of the novel setting the mood at the begining of each chapter and vividly examining the way it was during the depression. I interviewed Durward â€Å"Durk† Lynch he is in my field of interest where I want to work as one day. He is a Nurse Practitioner at the Vanden Bosh Clinic and at the College Clinic. He gave information on his background and what drove him to be a Nurse Practitioner (NP). He really has had a lot of experience, as I will explain to you what he has shared. Durk was 18 years old graduating from high school and at the time he didn’t have the goal or even thought to be a (NP). He was volunteering in a hospital working with paralyzed patients. He was in his 1st year of college and majoring in Psychology. He really had an interest in writing on health and disease. He used to write in the newspaper on Health and Disease. When he took a job in HMO in 1977 in his 2nd semester in college; is when he met his 1st Nurse Practitioner. That’s when he set his goal to become a NP. He states,† He never heard of a Nurse Practitioner before, he only heard of a physician’s assistant â€Å". Durk was determined to gain the experience he needed and was not in a hurry to do so. He worked in Larned, Kansas in a state mental institution for the criminally insane. Including also working in 3 different types of jail environments. Durk was also, enlisted in the army for the Nurse Core in his junior year in college. He was a Nurse Orderly in our time now is called a nursing assistant for 4years. He was an officer 2nd lieutenant for 3 years in the army. When he was in Korea he gained experience in medical surgery. Durk also, gained experience in orthopedic, neurosurgery, working with drug abusers, and people who had addictions to drugs/alcohol. He continued to gain experience by taking a job in the Missouri Clinic. They had no hospital in the county. The clinic was all they had; he worked there for 10 years. When his patients needed care that he could not perform he would have to send the patients 50 miles out of the clinic just to see a cardiologist and etc. Durk took another job in Ganado, Arizona where he worked as an orderly with deliveries, surgeries, saw TB, and even buried people. When the family members didn’t want to bury them or no one wanted to, a long time ago Durk and the Janitor dug the holes and buried the dead patients. Now, he is currently a Nurse Practitioner here in Gallup he says his patients here are harder due to diabetes and hypertension. He recalls the hardest patients for him was when he worked in a Cancer Clinic that was very aggressive to helping the patient gain some hope to be cancer free. He states,† There was at least one patient dying every week†. This was a very hard field to work with because of the high deaths of kids, young and old patients. He was the only Nurse Practitioner to last a year there. Most of the NP’s only lasted to 6 months if that. My perceptions before the interview were was he is very happy with his career and seems to be an absolute good-hearted person. He loves what he does and has enjoyed getting the experience he has. He states, †I have still not experienced everything there is to experience and I have been a Nurse Practitioner for 30 years†. When I asked him about his background he was real happy to talk about his experiences. By the way he talks about his patients you can tell in his tone he cares a lot about his patients. He says the youngest patient he attended to was 2 weeks old and the oldest was 106 years old. He has seen a 5-generation family and really has a lot of fun with his job. When I interviewed Dr. Lynch on the following questions he was not expecting the questions I asked. I asked him the first question. What specific communication skill does people entering your lines of work require? He answered, â€Å"You have to be a good communicator to talk to other doctors and communicate on paper. You are always interacting with people to get the help you need for your patients†. The second question I asked him was how important are public speaking skills to your job? He answered, â€Å"I don’t really do that and when I do its occasionally†. The only time he had to talk in front of people was at a commencement ceremony. He doesn’t really like to talk in front of a huge crowd. The last question I asked was how important to success in your career is effective public speaking? He stated, â€Å"Public speaking is not a big event in my career. It’s not really what I do maybe I shy away from it. In my career I only talk one on one wi th my patients and there family. Everything I discuss with my patients is private and confidential. So therefore I don’t need to really give a speech among a crowd.† I really enjoyed the interview listening to his experience and made me want to strive even more to become a good Nurse Practitioner. His words were really helpful and he gave me helpful tips on what route to take to get to my career goals. I thanked him for his time and thanked him for the helpful advice. That was my interview that I chose to talk about according to my field I am interested in.

Where Do Artists Get Their Ideas?

How does an artist really see the world? The real source of ideas for their masterpieces is a mystery. Many believe that the artists’ sources for their ideas are included in their surroundings and what they may have experienced. Well, those two things are the source of their ideas, but artists look at these things from a different perspective; much different from the normal point-of-view. To explain how artists decide on what to paint, there will be two paintings to be used as tools. Both of these paintings were made by artists from the Ancient world. The first painting, â€Å"Alexander the Great confronts Darius III at the Battle of Issos,† was created by Philoxenus of Eretria, a Macedonian artist who lived during the 4th Century B. C. , much later than Alexander’s rule (Smith 911). He was most likely requested to paint the masterpiece which was to be commissioned to King Cassander later on. With that statement, a clear reason for his decision to paint the masterpiece sprang out. During this period, artists were skilled-workers who had powerful clients; in his case, King Cassander. However, it still did not say why he chose that particular battle of Alexander the Great. By analyzing the painting itself, a person could easily conclude that it was recreated to assert Macedonia’s dominance over Persia. Besides that, Alexander the Great was the greatest Macedonian hero. This may very well be the reason why Philoxenus chose to paint the epic battle. It was simply fit for King Cassander, who was also known as the most powerful man in Macedonia during this period—Post-Alexander. A painting that defines power and Macedonia fits a man who defined power and Macedonia during his reign. This may have been Philoxenus’ idea after all. The second painting, â€Å"Battle of Centaurs and Wild Beasts,† was created by Zeuxis from Ephesus, a Greek artist who lived around 5th Century B. C. It was later on revealed that a mosaic of this was found in Roman Emperor Hadrian’s villa. Zeuxis was very well known for a host of Centaur paintings, one of which was the painting mentioned and the painting â€Å"Helen of Troy. Zeuxis’ central theme for this painting was the Greek mythological creature, the Centaurs, and their struggle against the wild beasts. It may have been an imagery of the imminence of the Persian invasion on Greek soil, since Xerxes was already amassing an army for the attack; the Greeks as the outnumbered but powerful Centaurs against the wild beasts as the invaders. Zeuxis lived around this period being knowledge of the upcoming or o ngoing Second Persian War. The painting, however, was most likely a symbolism of the First Persian War. One possible reason why he decided to paint this event could be because it was the most significant event at that time for most Greeks. He had the talent to portray the event on a panel or a wall, just as the artists at that time did, in an artistic way—sometimes with the use of characters similar to that of the painting. Unlike the first one by Philoxenus, this painting was more metaphorical or symbolic than direct. If the central idea was really about the Persian war—the first or the second—then it would be almost quite similar to that of the Alexander painting. These events were of great importance to the people and were great sources for flourishing art work, especially the heroes that played a major role in it. Heroism has greatly contributed to the formulation of ideas for the masterpieces. Philoxenus and Zeuxis, both artists from the Ancient world, depicted two great encounters by infusing them into art. When you say Christmas many only think of presents, lights, and reindeer. Not the birth of Jesus. But the non-Christians think it is offensive to nativities of the birth of Jesus in public, since there are many other holidays happening around the same time. The first amendment states â€Å"freedom of religion† to U.S. citizens so in this case I do believe that the government has the right to have a nativity on their property. The first amendment states freedom of religion so is it that they are able to celebrate any holiday at any time that they want. So, they would have the right to use any religious decorations they want. The government employees are United State citizens as well. So therefore government buildings should be able to be decorated for Christmas. People in the government who are not Christian also have the right to decorate any building they want in their religion. The problem is people don’t let them. This country was founded on Christianity meaning that we should celebrate Christian holidays to not forget out history. Christianity is very important to the majority of the population. Most people get to wind up in the whole material part of Christmas. They tend to forget about the whole meaning of Christmas. Christmas isn’t about what new game came out or who can use the most lights in their yard. Sure those things are exciting, but people should focus on what is most importan t.
